BFBS BIG SALUTE

Its been on the news, its been on the radio, posters everywhere- no one could miss the new BFBS Charity Fundraiser and Belize was well ahead if itself.  We are only a small unit but several times of year we are descended upon by approximately 1000 troops on a training exercise.  We decided to take advantage of this and as the first lot, The Rifles, were leaving and boarding the bus and plane we went round with home made collection boxes and asked them to 'chuck away' their coins and any unused Belizean and Mexican dollars.  It wasn't until we actually started counting it up that we realised we had hit a gold mine and the heart strings of the troops.  It was such a fantastic cause that they dug deep and put anything and everything into the pot and in a matter of minutes we collected over $1000. The charity grabbed our imagination and BFBS was a Hive of activity with people popping in with ideas on how they could raise some money.  We had Pedro from the Med Centre bravely volunteering to have his body and legs waxed, Woody from Ex Sailfish, 42 Sqn 28 Engr Regt having the tables turned and being beasted by the ladies, the Wives baking and selling cakes and sandwiches and ice cream to the troops as they literally came out of the jungle dreaming of anything but compo, another collection of change as the troops departed, charging entry into the Mess to watch the Champions League, face painting with a twist are just some of the simple ideas that raised a lot of funds.  Check out the photos page to see all the ideas and the moments captured on film.  We are still counting the money but so far are really proud of our achievements and look forward to it next year when we have even more ideas where everyone can get involved.

BFBS would like to thank the guys and gals of 1 Rifles, 2 Lancs, 28 Engineer Regt all the other supporting units and of course members of BATSUB for all their support and generosity- we are speechless- a first for radio!!!!!

Batsub News - Work Hard Play Hard

There is a lot of movement in Belize at the moment and its not just the Tropical Storms or the threat of Hurricanes.  Its the movement of families and 'singlies' who have been very much part of the heart of Batsub. They say that change is as good as a rest well not the case here.  Everytime there  is a change there is a party or function of some sort.  So you can imagine how busy our calendars have been if I said at least 6 families have left and at least 6 other staff.  So consolidate this Batsub are having a Catamaran Cruise to Goffs Caye where we can have one big farewell to many friends and show the unsuspecting arrivals the finest that Belize has to offer- a Caribbean Island alone in the warm turquoise waters.  If you are really lucky you may get to be directed by dolphins- wow.

We are also having our annual summer ball- James Bond 007 'theme'.  This is an opportunity to really dress up in tuxedos and long dresses- a bit of a rarity here as it is so humid but this time both the men and the women will suffer for their fashion.

All the above events will feature on our photos page, in the mean time why not check out how members of Bastub also work hard at both sport and helping out the local community by raising money for various causes.

Every year is La Ruta Maya- the great international river challenge.  Batsub always has about 8 teams that enter as well as being in charge of time keeping and admin.  Apart from an inter-batsub competition of various departments trying to beat each other it is also a personal challenge of sheer grit and determination.  It is 178 miles over 4 days in the croc infested waters, with rapids and swamps to try and break your spirit not to mention the heat, rain and sometimes sheer boredom due to not seeing a soul for hours.  But where ever they can supporters line the river bank cheering you on and the festival atmosphere at the start and finish of each day really gives the weary paddlers a boost.  Approximately 100 boats enter the competition - not all completed it.

The results will follow shortly.

More on the sporting front- FOOTBALL- recently Batsub have 'put' together a team (which changes weekly) with fixtures already played.  The team were well chuffed with their 4 - 1 victory against the Belize Police Force.  They are hoping to keep this momentum going with matches against the Airport staff and the BDF- a formidable team- yet to come.  Our very own Nick Ritchie managed to get a game and ran his long socks off chasing that ball.  See the pictures on the photos page!

Next week we are visited by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Waveruler and to celebrate we hare holding a sports afternoon.  The new cricket net is up so the team can start practicing their spins, googlies, yorkers, leg cutters (hopefully not literally) and even banana floaters!  The football team will continue to run up and down the pitch chasing a ball whilst the female part of Batsub will stand on the side lines giving their support whilst trying to fathom out the off side rule!

St Georges Day celebrations on St Georges Caye.  Just another party some of you may think - but this is Belize and would you 'Belize it' - it had a twist.  St Georges Caye is one of the islands off the coast of mainland Belize where the British Forces Adventure Training Centre (BFATC) is based.  From here the troops can do kayaking, sailing, diving and other water sports.  The jewel in the crown is a sand bar 1km from the island where the water is shallow enough to stand in.  This is where St Georges Day celebrations were held.  Tents, tables and BBQ were taken out by boat, the volleyball net put up and then the families arrived with all their floats and cool boxes.  Boats arrived from all directions, some dropping off the families others dropping anchor and 'parking up' for the afternoon and watching the children jumping off the side, snorkeling and marveling at the underwater treasures.

As the sun set everyone went back to BFATC on St Georges Caye where there was a live steel band, traditional fish and chips wrapped in newspaper and a lot of dancing. Many residents from St Georges Caye joined in the celebrations as did the Ex Sailfish (28 Engr Regt) who had been based on the island to refurbish the BFATC classrooms, dining attaps and pier.  This day was their deadline and they pulled out all the stops to get it ready on time. They could finally relax and join in the dancing and partying which continued into the early hours of the morning!
