Simon Guettier is BFBS' longest running’
presenter, having joined the station in 1978. He comes originally from
Jersey in the Channel Isles - hence the dodgy surname - and started with
BFBS in Cyprus. "My first job was getting tunes (vinyl records in
those days) out of the library for the other presenters. I remember hearing
them played on air and thinking 'I got that out'!
In the following years Simon has presented most shows on most BFBS stations.
From 1990 - 1992 he presented Simon & The Squad from BFBS in London,
a show featuring daily celebrity guests which was also broadcast on BBC
Radio 5 in the UK. “It was great fun to do, and also gave me the
unforgettable chance to broadcast from inside No. 10 Downing Street: I
was lucky enough to interview the then Prime Minister, John Major."
Simon says that although radio has seen huge changes in his time with
BFBS, the basic idea remains the same: to play great music and try and
be a pal to your Forces audience. “The British Forces are not only
the best Armed Forces in the world, but they, make a great audience too:
their sense of humour is legendary, and listening to me sometimes you
need one!”
