Frequently Asked Questions - Germany
So what will Multi-Channel BFBS TV mean to you?
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:
What channels will I get?
How much will it cost me?
Nothing, it’s free! Multi-Channel BFBS TV, provided by SSVC, largely funded by the MoD, will provide you with six television channels and ten BFBS Radio channels absolutely free of charge.
How do I get Multi-Channel BFBS TV?
Installation is being undertaken following a timetable designed by G1. The process has already started in areas with poor or no TV reception. You will be notified when installation will take place in your area.
How long will it take before I get DTH?
Starting in July 2005, the first 20,000 installations are expected to be completed by mid-2007.
What does the installation entail?
An engineer will visit your designated quarter at a pre-notified time and carry out a quick, simple installation process. After that it’s simply a matter of plugging a set top box (STB) into the wall socket, and then connecting it to your TV.
How do I get the set top box?
Depending upon your location either the engineer will bring your STB with him or you will be able to collect it from the local distributor, normally the QM.
Will I get cable or satellite?
That depends on the most effective and economic way to serve your quarter. The engineer will advise what system you will get when installation is underway. You do get the same BFBS channel line-up with either system.
Will I need a viewing card? If so, how do I get one?
Cable systems don’t require viewing cards. Satellite systems do require viewing cards. Cards for satellite systems are obtained from SSVC Retail shops against a valid Service ID. If, in exceptional circumstances only, you aren’t able to get to a shop just telephone your nearest branch for assistance (see below).

I currently subscribe to HCM. Do I need to keep this subscription in order to get DTH Multi-Channel BFBS TV?
Once DTH is installed you will have the option of retaining your HCM subscription should you wish to do so. However, it is not required in order to receive the six free channels from BFBS TV.
I currently subscribe to a satellite provider. Will DTH replace this?
No, the two systems can exist together, but DTH Multi-Channel BFBS TV is free!
Is it planned to increase the number of channels?
At the moment we only have capacity for 6 channels. Should this increase in the future, and the necessary funding was made available, BFBS would like to provide a children’s channel during the day and early evening, becoming a documentary/science channel in the evenings. A movie channel would also be a priority.
Why is BFBS2 not available 24 hours a day?
BFBS2 contains some programmes that are not suitable for family viewing and therefore, in non-operational areas, these are only shown after 9pm in order to comply with Ofcom regulations.
Do I take the STB with me when I move?
No, the STBs and viewing cards for satellite systems are the property of SSVC. The box will be on your accommodation inventory and must be left there when you leave. It is of no use with any other satellite TV system. The viewing card must be returned to the issuing authority.
