Our
Remit BFBS Television
broadcasts to British Forces personnel and their families based
overseas.
It truly is a lifeline and considered one of
the most important arms of the MoD’s welfare services for
its soldiers, sailors and airmen and women and their dependants.
BFBS TV began broadcasting in 1975 down a microwave link to
British troops and their families in Germany. It now produces
and broadcasts two 24-hour channels via satellite to 17 countries
and HM Ships.

BFBS
provides:
A
source of English language TV
A link with home
Continuity – if
you get posted from Cyprus to Germany you won’t miss an
episode of your favourite drama.
Information – we
produce Forces Action welfare films and announcements; command
information; promos and trailers; cinema
guides; Forces Diary; crimestoppers, health, and drug awareness,
etc, especially for our military audience.
News – as well as relaying British news bulletins
from BBC and ITN, we produce our own BFBS Reports half-hour news
magazine twice a week, live from our own studio, with reporters
and crews in all major overseas bases, and on the frontline in
any conflict.
In-house productions– documentaries such as Geri
Halliwell’s concert for 11,000 troops in the desert in Oman;
makeover series on military quarters and gardens; fly-on-the-wall
of the Skillforce initiative in inner city schools; days out for
families in Germany and Cyprus.
Children’s TV –
from our own studio, Room 785 is two hours of live, interactive
kids TV each day, with birthdays, competitions, texts and emails
from the Forces ‘family’ around the world.
Messages home– first there were ‘blueys’,
the airmail letters troops send home, then e-blueys, now TV Blueys
– the messages we film from troops to home, and from families
to troops. These are hugely valued as the only means of seeing
and hearing loved ones alive and well. We screened over 800 TV
Blueys during the Iraqi conflict alone.
