Garrison at forefront of gold rush!
Aldershot,
the home of the British Army and Army Sport has been named as the
holding camp for the British Olympics team for London 2012.
The Garrison
beat bids from the Universities at Bath and Loughborough to be chosen
as the base for Team GB.
The site's proximity to
London and secure location prevailed over the other nominated venues.
Security was a key factor
in the decision as the British Olympic team faced specific threats
in the run up to the Athens Olympics.
Aldershot entered the
bidding late but crucially had the support of Simon Clegg, BOA Chief
Executive, himself a former officer in the Army and the current
head of the Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt.
The Army's centre of Sporting
Excellence already has many of the facilities in place for the 700-strong
team that will descend on Aldershot. Between now and 2012 some new
facilities will be built including a combat sports centre, whilst
others will receive a facelift such as the athletics track and hockey
pitches.
